Hi All:

My name is Arne Austring, the Umpire-in-chief for South Surrey White Rock Minor Softball Ass’n (SSWRMSA) and I wanted to say hello and give some information about the upcoming ball season. Last year went quite well and we received some very nice comments from many coaches and parents. However, there is always room to improve. Also, we always need more umps so if you have friends or classmates who may be interested in umpiring encourage them to come out this year.

Each year every umpire is required to attend a clinic. The clinics give us an opportunity for registration, certification, and the standardization of all the people in blue on the field - US! For those of you new to umpiring the clinic covers the calls umpires make, the rules we apply, and the mechanics we use for positioning and movement on the field. There’s also an exam at the end of the sessions testing your knowledge. The closest clinic is:

District 7 Umpire Clinic
Clayton Heights Secondary, Cloverdale
7003 – 188th St. (N.E. Cloverdale)
March 12th and/or 13th, 2011 (times T.B.A.)

As I mentioned, every umpire is required to participate in a clinic each year. There are rules changes and mechanics updates and it’s a good introduction to the upcoming season. The clinic cost for our umpires is paid by SSWRMSA to insure that our umpires are properly trained as well as covered by the proper insurance. We also expect that the umpires we register will work games for SSWRMSA at Sunnyside Park in South Surrey. Our association also provides the basic safety equipment umpires need for their games.

Now for the exciting news. This year, two local associations are hosting “mini” clinics. They’re a great introduction for new or young umpires, a good refresher for experienced umpires, and a perfect way to warm-up for the season. These clinics are held in a school gymnasium (so please wear soft soled shoes and clothes you can easily move around in) and are led by some very senior and highly qualified experienced umpires. The topics covered are:

Calls (ball, strike, safe, out, time, etc.)
Mechanics (positioning, both behind the plate and on the bases),and
Some basic rules will be introduced and explained during these sessions.

There are two evenings a week at two different schools and there’s no cost to the individual. For the next 7 weeks the warm-up clinics will be on Tuesdays and Thursdays. They are an excellent opportunity for new and old umpires to get ready for the upcoming season – similar to players, former players, and returning umps this is a good place to “what happens when….” or “this happened to me…” or “if this happens, what do I do…”.
